Innisfree Garden
The Innisfree Garden is an American “stroll garden,” combining landscape architecture of the Modern and Romantic eras with Chinese and Japanese design philosophies. Located on 185 acres in the heart of Dutchess County, the garden has roots that go back to the 1930s when the estate was a private home. The landscape architect Lester Collins oversaw the garden until his death in the 1990s, including when the grounds went public in 1960. The Garden consists of many smaller vignette gardens which are all connected to the lake on the property. In terms of type, the gardens run the gamut, from intensely sculpted pathways and meadows to more rustic bits of woods and bogs. The Garden is open seasonally, so check the website for hours. Portions of the grounds are wheelchair accessible, but there are patches of uneven terrain and even loose gravel.

Wethersfield Estate & Garden
Deep in the heart of Duchess County, the Wetherfield Estate & Garden spans over 1000 acres, and features countless formal gardens in the Classical style. Begun in 1937 as a project of one of the richest men of his generation, Chauncey Devereux Stillman, the estate has blossomed into 20 miles of walkable gardens and trails. These landscaped grounds combine sculpture, horticulture, and nature according to aesthetic ideals prevalent in the early 20th century. The estate features several architectural achievements as well, including the Main House, built in the Georgian Revival style, and the Carriage House, which houses a museum dedicated to the age of carriage-driving and boasts 22 antique carriages. In an effort to keep the estate's footprint low, few visitors are admitted at a time, and the gardens and trails are open seasonally. Check the website for more information on hours and to make reservations, which are recommended for all visitors to the grounds. While the buildings and portions of the gardens are wheelchair accessible, many of the trails contain uneven grounds.
